ARISE!
The Story of Solo Leveling
1. The World of Gates and Hunters
The story begins in a world where mysterious “gates” appear, connecting Earth to dangerous dungeons filled with monsters. To fight these creatures, some humans awaken supernatural powers and become Hunters.
The protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, is an E-rank Hunter, considered the weakest of all. Despite being mocked, he continues to hunt to pay for his mother’s hospital bills and support his sister.
2. The Double Dungeon & The System
During a low-rank raid, Jin-Woo’s party enters a dungeon with a hidden chamber, known as a double dungeon. Inside, they face terrifying statues that kill most of the party. Jin-Woo barely survives by completing hidden “rules,” but is gravely injured.
At the brink of death, Jin-Woo receives a mysterious ability called the System, which allows him to level up infinitely, unlike normal Hunters who remain fixed at their rank. The System presents him with quests, rewards, and penalties—turning his life into a game-like progression.
3. From Weakest to Strongest
With the System’s help, Jin-Woo rapidly grows in power:
-
He gains incredible strength, speed, and regeneration.
-
He acquires new skills, including the ability to store items in an inventory.
-
Most importantly, he unlocks the power of Shadow Extraction, allowing him to raise dead monsters and humans as loyal shadow soldiers.
From this point on, Jin-Woo’s rise is unstoppable. Every dungeon raid he enters becomes an opportunity to level up and expand his shadow army.
4. Dungeon Breaks & Hunter Politics
As Jin-Woo grows, he begins attracting attention:
-
The Korean Hunter Association notices his abnormal growth.
-
Powerful guilds, like the White Tiger and Hunters Guild, try to recruit him.
-
Other nations start hearing rumors of his strength.
At the same time, the world faces increasing threats as dungeons grow stronger and dungeon breaks (when monsters pour into the human world) become more frequent.
5. The Rise of Shadow Monarch
Jin-Woo’s powers eventually reveal their true origin. He isn’t just a unique Hunter—the System was created to prepare him as the successor of the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn, one of the most powerful beings in existence.
In the universe, two great factions exist:
-
The Rulers: angelic beings who wish to protect humanity.
-
The Monarchs: destructive beings who wish to annihilate it.
Ashborn, once a Monarch, betrayed the others and sided with humanity. He chose Jin-Woo as his vessel and heir.
6. International Conflicts and Growing Fame
Jin-Woo’s reputation spreads worldwide as he defeats enemies thought impossible. He eventually surpasses S-Rank Hunters, the world’s strongest, and is recognized as humanity’s greatest weapon.
He also faces international tensions, as powerful Hunters from other countries view him as a rival or threat.
7. The Monarchs’ War
The story escalates as the Monarchs begin descending to Earth:
-
Antares, the Monarch of Destruction (dragon king), leads the charge.
-
Other Monarchs wage war, sending waves of monsters across the world.
Jin-Woo fights them using his army of shadows, which grows into an unstoppable force. His most notable shadows include Igris, Beru, and Tusk, once powerful enemies who now serve him faithfully.
8. Final Battles
The climax centers on Jin-Woo’s confrontation with the Monarchs:
-
He defeats several Monarchs using his new mastery of shadow powers.
-
Ultimately, he faces Antares, the Dragon Monarch, in a world-shattering battle. With the help of Ashborn’s full power and his shadow army, Jin-Woo emerges victorious.
But victory comes with consequences: Earth has suffered greatly, and countless lives were lost in the battles.
9. The Ultimate Sacrifice & Time Rewind
In the light novel’s ending (and teased in the manhwa):
-
Jin-Woo gains access to the Cup of Reincarnation, a powerful relic that can rewind time.
-
To save humanity from the war, he sacrifices his own timeline, rewinding the world back to before the Monarchs’ invasion.
In this new reality:
-
Gates still exist, but the devastating Monarch war never happens.
-
Jin-Woo alone remembers everything, carrying the burden of his erased victories.
-
Humanity lives in peace, never knowing the destruction that was avoided.
10. Epilogue
Jin-Woo lives quietly, having ensured a better future for everyone. Though his path was filled with loneliness and sacrifice, he fulfills Ashborn’s legacy as the true Shadow Monarch, protector of both shadows and humanity.
